A warm September day at the seaside produced a game whose pendulum swung from one side to another - but finally saw High Halstow emerge victorious and with it secure 2nd place in the division, enough to see the team promoted as league runners up.
Halstow arrived at Whitstable needing only to win to gain promotion. Having won the toss and elected to bat, Cmo’s side got off to a reasonable start until Tyler Dockwray was bowled with the score on 31.
A 4 wicket collapse ensued for a mere 11 runs, leaving the visitors on 42 for 5, and all notion of a promotion placed very much on hold. Enter Archie Lally and Andrew Maurice who steadied the ship, with the latter batting deep yet again for 58, joined by Jamie Maguire with 44 who clawed Halstow back into the game. 100 became, 130, became 160, before closing all out 193 from 48.1 ovs – a country mile from 42 for 5.
Objective - Defend 193.
Whitstable were soon on top racing away to 80-0, before a timely change of bowling saw Clarke Dockwray (4 for 32) brought on and remove McVicar for 44. Despite the start, at 81-1, the game swung again, and in doing so, Whitstable slumped to 142 for 8, the game swinging back in Halstow’s favour.
But at 8 wickets down and staring defeat in the face, the home bats dug in. Needing 50 to win, Phillis and Carter ground out the balls, picking up singles, despatching the bad deliveries and helping to bring the total into sight. 50 soon became 40, then 30, the pair adding 34 before Carter fell to Nash on 176.
And so finally, in the last ball of the 45th over, Charley Nash (4 for 18) stepped up and clean bowled the last home bat to take Halstow over the line – winning by 12 runs in a really decent well contested game. A result that propels High Halstow into Division 3 – but hey…. that’ll be a story for another day !
A huge thank you to all our friends, supporters and sponsors - together we make High Halstow Cricket Club.
